Taking into consideration the need of Higher education of the rural students in this Taluka, this college was started by Sahakar Maharshi Shankarrao Mohite Patil. Initially it was Arts, Commerce & Science College. Akluj is the centre place of business & commercial activities of this Taluka. So Commerce faculty was started from the beginning. It aimed at to make the students aware about commercial & business activities.

The Dept. has a good tradition of University Results during last five years. The percentage of result is above 70% every year.

Shri. Mohite-Patil Madansinh Shankarrao, Shri. Mohite-Patil Dhairyashil Rajsinh are the prominent Alumni of the dept. Shri. Mohite-Patil Sangramsinh Jaysinh is also is also the prominent alumini of Commerce faculty. He is the Director of Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Akluj & Sabhapati of the College Development Committee of the Shankarrao Mohite Mahavidyalaya, Akluj. He is the founder of the “Sangramsinh Mitra Mandal”, a social organization. He was the former Sarpanch of Grampanchayat Akluj.

Many of the past students of the faculty are good businessman, Chartered Accountant, Lawyers, Teachers, Shopkeepers, Self-employed persons, and Farmers etc.

From 2008-09 the faculty run the C. O. P. add on – course of Insurance granted by U. G. C. Along with this the faculty has also run a Certificate Course in Basic Accounting.

The faculty has received Research Center for Ph.D. of Punya Shlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Solapur and there are two recognised research guide of the university.

In future, there is an intention proposed to organize Seminars, Workshops and Study Tours for the students & teachers in the faculty.
