Sahakar Maharshi late Shankarrao Mohite-Patil, established educational institution named Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Akluj on 23^rd June, 1948 by opening hostel for students. After that the opened a chain of new branches one by one after every year. Shankarrao Mohite Mahavidyalaya is one of them. It was started in June 1967 with arts science and Commerce faculties. With the opening of the collage, first Principal shri. P.K. Deshmukh included Economics as an optional subject for the first year of arts and nest year it was extended to second year of B.A and then B.A. II in June 1970. Shri Shaikh M.S. was head of the Department. After his voluntary retirement, Shri. Bagade D.S. is appointed in 01st Jan, 1993 as a lecture in economics. Shri. Thite N.N became as a head of the Economics Department. From August 1998, Shri. Nanaware was appointed as HOD of Economics. After his retirement since 2015 Dr. Bagade D.S is appointed as a HOD of Economics. In 01^st Jan, 2013 Dr. Bagade D.S. is given promotion of professor in Economics under CAS. Till today he is working as professor and HOD of the Economics Department. In June 2010, Dr. Nalawade A.S. is appointed as lecturer in Economics. Now there are 02 full time faculty members and Dr. Misal .P.B., Dr. Pawar N.R. and Sontakke. M.S. are 03 CHB faculty members are working in the Department. In the department the Ph.D Research center is started in 2013. It is very useful to rural students tough who are interested in research work. In the research center Dr. H.S. Nanaware and Dr. Bagade D.S. are the research guides and eight students are admitted for the research work. One research students is awarded Ph.D and two research students are submitted final thesis to the university.

Department organized two time one day conference of Solapur University Economics association. In 30/12/2017 the department organized economic research paper presentation competition activity with collaboration of Solapur University Economics association. In this competition total 38 participant are presented research papers. In the year 2017 department student Mr. Jadhave Nelesh Regunath is awarded first prize of paper presentation in the conference of Solapur University Economics association. Due to this activity students are motivated to research.

The faculty of department is completed three minor research projects funded by UGC. In 2017-18 Department started certificate course in Agri-business for B.A III students. The main activities under this course are to visit agro process industry, to visit to agricultural produce market and organize lectures of eminent persons. The course is benefited to students to start their own business.

The faculty members are also participated in social works. Faculty members worked as a NSS members and also students participated in cultural activities, NSS activities, and research activities etc. the Economics Department is progress day by day in research and other activity in the collage.
