Department Of English
Sahakar Maharshi Shankarrao Mohite Patil established Shikshan Prasarak Mandal in 1948. Keeping in mind the need of education to the masses in this area, he started, initially, Vijay Vidhyarthi Vastigraha (Boys’ Hostel) and some high schools. Later, he realized that the students of the farmers, labourers and downtrodden classes in this area are in need of higher education, so he established Shankarrao Mohite Mahavidyalaya, Akluj (formerly Arts, Science and Commerce College, Akluj) in the year 1967. He believed that English Education plays a seminal role in the overall personality development of the students. The rural students should be well conversant and versatile in the modern age with the knowledge of English language and communication.
Keeping the above background at the center, the college started the Department of English and Linguistics at undergraduate level in the year 1983. Initially, Prin. P.K. Deshmukh, Prof. R.G. Joshi and Prof. S.B. Chavan were the teachers. In 1983, Prof. (Dr.) R.M. Ingale joined the Department. In 1989, Prof. A.N. Sapali joined the Department. Prof. V.R. Surve, Prof. (Dr.) S.V. Shinde and Prof. (Dr.) H.K. Awatade also joined the services in the year 1991, 1994 and 1995 respectively.
Now the department is headed by Prof. V.R. Surve along with his collegues Prof. (Dr.) S.V. Shinde, Prof. (Dr.) H.K. Awatade and some teachers on CHB.
The undergraduate department of English and Linguistics runs courses at B.A. B.Com. and B.Sc. as a compulsory subject to improve the language skills of students. It also runs Linguistics at B.A. Part I, English (Opt.) at B.A. I & B.A. II and English (Special) at B.A. Part III. The Department runs two certificate courses entitled ‘The Skill Development Course in English’ and ‘Certificate Course in Translation Studies’. The Department has well established ‘Language Laboratory’ with Linguaphone Software. It is also connected online with separate internet facility. In addition to this, there is PG (MA) and Ph.D. Research Centre in the Department. There is a good tradition of results. Many students have secured good marks in University Examinations of PAH Solapur University, Solapur and some have been the recipients of the Gold Medals for getting first rank in University at M.A. (Entire English).

Linguaphone Language Laboratory
The Department of English and Linguistics took initiative to design a course of Language Lab to improve communicative competence of the students. So we have set up a Linguaphone Language Lab this year (2011) of ten booths. Every booth contains computer set, Headphone with mike, Linguaphone Language Lab. L21 interactive Software and Speech Recognition Software (SRS) with Dongle key for practical work. This Language Lab is also working as a multimedia center. This course consisted with four level Basic, Command, Confidence and Fluent Level. This lab has electricity backup facility. Recently the lab has been connected with internet facility to have the access globally.
